Every J&D contemporary bass guitar is designed with the modern player in-mind, and the 48 series of basses is no different. The 48 series 5-string bass promises incredible tonal range, super-fast neck and striking good looks, making it perfect for a wide variety of musical styles. Featuring active electronics, hum-cancelling pickups, modern solid bridge, offset fretboard inlays, 5-piece neck with 24 frets and incredible playability, the J&D 48 series is perfect for anyone looking for a professional instrument without breaking the bank.

Note: These strings are specially designed specifically to fit the NS Design Basses (NXT, CR, EU and WAV4 models). They are too short to fit a regular upright bass, and may not have the right dimensions to fit other electric upright basses. Contact us if you would like to verify dimensions of these strings vs. your bass before ordering for a different EUB.The NS Electric line was developed as a joint effort between Ned Steinberger and D'Addario Strings. Because volume is unlimited for electric instruments, NS Electric line focuses on tone and expressive nuance rather than acoustic power. It brings out the richest tone from any electric instrument, and work well for acoustic instruments when subtlety of expression is paramount.NS Strings are mostly made with stranded steel cores wrapped with aluminum, brass, tungsten, nickel, and stainless steel. The line is designed for use with electric upright basses using NS Standard Double Bass string length. D'Addario's NS Helicore Contemporary Double Bass set produces a brighter sound, and features a lower tension feel. They are similar or identical to the stock strings on the NS Design CR4M and CR5M basses. They were previously sold as the "NSFL-Flatwound Light" set and have recently undergone a packaging and name change. A little brighter and "zingier," not as traditional in sound, for that "Crossover" vibe. They have a more electric-sounding (longer) sustain character than the "traditional" set.All NS Double Bass strings are designed to fit NS Double Basses and NSDB-Standard instruments : 46.5" wound length, 54" overall string length. Strings are sold as sets; D'Addario sells the strings in 4-string sets, with high C and low B strings to complete sets for extended-range instruments. Also note that the NS Design CR, NXT and WAV4 basses are designed to accommodate full (3/4) size upright bass strings, using the wrap-around bottom surface and keyhole string anchor slots on the back of the instrument - so if none of these stock strings are your cup of tea, you're not married to them; you can consider other options from our regular string selection!

The Ignition Special Edition (SE) basses are based on the Höfner violin basses from the 1970s. In contrast to the Contemporary series, the Ignition basses have a hollow body. In addition to the classic control panel with Tea Cup knobs, they are equipped with a wooden bridge and trapeze tailpiece and carry the traditional Höfner logo on the body. The new Cavern Version (HI-CA-SE-SB) of our Ignition bass offers the famous pick up spacing from 1961 in addition to the features already mentioned. All our Ignitions (SE) come with a certificate of authenticity and the famous BASSMAN sticker.

The interest for the contemporary repertoire, combined with the interest never abandoned for the Electric Bass Guitar, pushed me to investigate the role of this instrument in the contemporary repertoire, observing that only at chamber music level It has found its own dimension, however totally absent in the soloist field. Can the electric bass guitar rise to the role of solo instrument in contemporary music? How can it find its way to be considered as a solo instrument in contemporary music? Can composers approach this instrument exalting its expressiveness and technical potential? The research is divided into two parts: The first part concerns the history of the instrument, its construction and its impact on musical culture. In this part we will also analyse some pieces of the contemporary repertoire, analysis accompanied by video demonstrations of some excerpts that I perform personally. The second part is the fulcrum of the research: the execution of a piece for electric bass and electronics, "L' Autodidatta" by Maurizio Tedde. It will highlight the collaboration between the performer and the composer, the vision of the composer and the role of the electric bass in the piece, demonstrating that Bass and the electric bassist can have their own dimension in the soloist field. The following research stems from a personal desire to incorporate my background as an electric bass player which has always remained outside of my double bass studies. In fact I started my personal musical career as a bassist in pop, rock and blues contexts and only later in life approached the double bass in the classical world. I have always kept these two worlds separate as they are very different in form, attitude and style. It was only during my time studying here at The Hague Conservatory that I had my first in depth experience with contemporary music. I then had the opportunity to talk and eventually collaborate with some composition students, discussing the strengths and possibilities of the electric bass in contemporary music. Exploring the repertoire I found that few composers have used the electric bass as a means to support the harmonic foundation in an ensemble replacing the double bass, but above all, very few have thought of the electric bass as a solo instrument with the means to convey expression and language in a classical context, restricting the possibility of the electric bass to impose itself in new repertoire. From this fact emerges the question of my research:

Can the electric bass guitar rise to the role of solo instrument in contemporary music? How can it find its way to be considered as a solo instrument in contemporary music? Can composers approach this instrument exalting its expressiveness and technical potential ?

This research would like to address these questions through a cultural investigation of the impact of the electric bass on the world of pop music and jazz, why it was effective and how it has and continues to inspire the music of contemporary composers and whether their inspirations benefited the instrument. This investigation helps to understand why there is not a concept of the bass guitar as a solo instrument. After this journey discovering the recent past of this instrument and its place in the realm of Contemporary music, I will focus on a real world creative and compositional process which will end with the creation of a newly composed piece for electric bass and electronics written by a former student at the Conservatory of The Hague, Maurizio Tedde. This piece demonstrates that it is possible to put the electric bass guitar at the centre of a compositional process. 2ff7e9595c
